Decadence Gourmet, a tenant at the Business Incubator Center well-known for their ‘Cheesecakes in a Jar®’ was one of the winners in the Pantry category for the 2016 Good Food Awards – a national contest with over 2,400 entries, for their ‘Colorado Style’ Southern Chow Chow. This category had over 250 entrants, and The ‘Colorado-Style’ Southern Chow Chow came out a winner. This award follows on the heels of his recent 1st Place in the Condiments/Specialty category, and 2nd Place in Condiments/Relish category in the Chili Pepper Magazine 2015 awards.
When owner Lee Mathis began expanding his cheesecake business back east, he was introduced to Chow Chow, a traditional Southern relish that dates back to the 18th century that incorporates whatever grows in the canner’s garden. The relish is commonly used on sandwiches, hot dogs, brats, egg and macaroni salads, toppings on eggs, and in the south, as a topping on pinto or black-eyed peas. Mathis provides recipes which utilize Chow Chow in deviled eggs, tartar sauce, and other unique combinations.
Mathis is known for his affinity for fiery foods, running a popular pop-up restaurant during the summer featuring foods with “heat.” The Colorado Style Southern Chow Chow recipe kicks it up a few notches, with five different hot peppers, including Ghost and Trinidad Scorpion peppers. Mathis says, “We feel that by combining our love of heat with a sweet and savory southern staple, we’ve created the perfect combination of sweet & heat!” and apparently Good Food judges agree.
